Laurel and Lauren were twins.
Evie was a human whose family owned an inn. Layton was passing through and Evie caught his eye. He visited often and stayed when he found out that Evie was pregnant. When the girls were two months old Evie and Layton had a fight resulting in Layton deciding to take Lauren and left leaving Laurel behind because she was club footed.
Evie's family died when Laurel was three leaving the inn for Evie to run, however she became sick and died when Laurel was four. An orphan Laurel was put out on the street and the inn was sold for taxes. Laurel was later adopted by Meylor i Blackheart when she was six and the club foot was corrected.

Lauren was killed while trying to protect her daughter who, it is believed, was the focus of the attack. It is speculated that the attack was orchestrated by the Ithildin family (excluding Layton). There are several speculations as to why. When another attack occurred Tristan chose to give Evangelina to Lauren’s sister for her protection, and decided not knowing where his daughter was would make her even safer.
